ENTERING A NEW ERA, A NEW FOCUS
Miami, Florida…October, 2022 - In the fall of 1978, Jon Reed Sims founded the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. T his was a way to bring more music to the local Gay Freedom Day Parade, and to share the love o f music, brotherhood, and entertaining, and try to deal with the unimaginable health crisis now known as AIDS. This gave birth to a worldwide LGBTQ choral phenomenon that now boasts h undreds of choruses around the globe.
Established in 1999, the Miami Gay (Men's) Chorus has been bringing entertainment to the South Florida community, inspiring and changing lives through the power of music and community building. But like many cultural institutions, it has struggled with a dwindling membership, ticket sales, management, and staying relevant in an ever-changing community. Dealing with the real possibility of closing, and stopping the decades of music, the chorus has unanimously accepted close its doors for good.
UNITY COALITION|COALICIÓN UNIDA (UC|CU) the organization for the Latinx|Hispanic & Indigenous LGBTQ community, advancing Equality & Fairness, through Education, Leadership and Awareness, since 2002, with programming in Miami and Bogotá, “UC|CU was a big supporter of the former chorus and the arts, for years.” said director Herb Sosa. “We believe in its mission, legacy, and membership, and by creating a New Chorus, hope to help keep the chorus’s talents and intent, alive and thriving for decades to come” added Sosa.

UNITY COALITION|COALICIÓN UNIDA NAMES ANAIDA CARQUEZ-SOLER AS NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE MIAMI GAY CHORUS AND UC ARTS COALITION
Meet ANAIDA CARQUEZ-SOLER | I am a Venezuelan Choral Conductor and Vocal Coach with a Master’s Degree in Arts Management from Universidad de Salamanca, Spain. I began my musical career as a student of Choral Conducting, leading the Coro San José de Chacao, affiliated with the National Academy of Gregorian Chant in Caracas, Venezuela.
As Vocal Coach and Assistant Conductor of the renowned and awarded choirs Cantoría Alberto Grau and the Schola Cantorum de Venezuela, I was part of multiple and successful concert tours performed in Europe, Asia, Australia, Latin America and USA. I have performed extensively on the most renowned stages, such as: Lincoln Center, New York, Sydney Opera House, Australia, Taipei National Theatre & Concert Hall, Taiwan, Teatro Colon de Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cremona Baptistery, Italy, St. Peter's Basilica, Vaticano, St. Gallen Cathedral, Germany, Uppsala Cathedral and Stockholm's Domkyrka (Stockholm Cathedral) Sweden, Gran Teatre del Liceu (Liceu Opera), Barcelona, Spain, among others. Nominated in 2002 and 2003 to the Grammy Award® and Latin Grammy Award® under the Best Classical Album for “Golijov: La Pasion Segun San Marcos” as Schola Cantorum de Venezuela’s Assistant Director.
Through the years I have conducted in my home country and Latin America, multiple children and community choirs; most of them focused on the use of music as a tool of social action and integration, based on the need to promote music education with special emphasis on communities with limited resources.
I moved to the United States in 2015 and joined Amazonia Vocal Ensemble in 2016 as the choir's Musical Director. As Amazonia’s Director I have been invited as artist and guest lecturer at Florida International University –FIU, University of Miami –UM, Carnegie Hall, Columbia University –NY, Nova Southeastern University and many other community centers, public schools, libraries and churches along South Florida.
Former Director of Voice Department in Conchita Espinosa Conservatory of the Arts and Choir Director at Conchita Espinosa Academy in Miami.
I have served as adjudicator and clinician in festivals, competitions and choral encounters in Florida. Invited multiple times to perform along with the Minnesota Chorale and Border CrosSing (Minnepolis, MN), I was recently invited as guest conductor for the program Bridges: Creer/Believe (2022), a series of musical initiatives that harness the richness and diversity of the global choral repertoire to engage cultural communities and raise awareness of pressing social needs. My new musical adventure, through Sound Healing, has taken me back to the source: to the sound waves.
I firmly believe that we have to become one with the sound that is our nature and thus vibrate in consonance with it. We need healing sounds for our body and soul to “sing” their own music, to re-calibrate the right chords in every singing body.
For a person who has been singing and conducting choirs most of her life, I now feel this urge to keep “singing” this universal music and make everyBODY to sing their own song, their own music, the one is needed for healing and re-connection with the right vibration, to regain the right balance.
