It's no wonder Machu Picchu is Peru's most-visited site. Dating to the mid-1400s, it's a marvel of mortar-free limestone architecture perched on a high plateau deep in the Amazonian jungle. Get there via train from Cusco and travel through deep Andean gullies and enjoy stunning views.
To prepare for a trek to Machu Picchu, you should improve your cardiovascular health, build strength, and acclimate to the altitude. You can also mentally prepare for the challenge.
Whether you're planning a multi-day trek or a quick in-and-out day trip, you should be prepared to dress for mountain conditions. Bring water and a rain jacket, even if it looks like a beautiful sunny day. Speaking of the sun, remember that the ozone layer over Peru is compromised, and that, combined with the elevation, makes the sun extremely strong here, so wear a hat and use plenty of high SPF sunscreen. Keep insect repellant handy as well.
Don't bring drones, umbrellas, walking sticks, or trekking poles since they're all prohibited at Machu Picchu.

UNITY
COALITION|COALICIÓN UNIDA is based in Miami, Florida with programming and
operations in Colombia as well. Our South Florida offices are within walking
distance of where the Miami River and Biscayne Bay meet, the Miami Circle – a
sacred place with over 10,000 years of human history and habitat, and many
other historically significant places, and within a short drive of the
Everglades National Park and Miccosukee and Seminole Tribe Nations. The Miami
River at Biscayne Bay is the place where Europeans first settled in the area,
and also the departure point for the relocation to Cuba of a handful of
Tequesta Indians – down from a documented 10,000 just a decade before.
Miami and
South Florida is the homeland of the Tequesta, Miccosukee and Seminole people.
They have lived here for many thousands of years. Descendants of Africans
reside here, too. They reached their current homelands after being enslaved and
brought to the current America’s. Indigenous people from other Native nations
also live across South Florida. They’ve made innumerable contributions to our
region.
UNITY
COALITION|COALICIÓN UNIDA committed to supporting Indigenous people and nations
in our home state and beyond.
To do this, we’ve outlined several ways We plan
to take action on an ongoing basis:
- From this point
onward, admission to our programming, workshops and special events will be
free for Native people.
- Our purchases reflect
our values. We have updated our vendor policy to include a priority focus
on Indigenous-owned businesses.
- We’ll use our
platform to amplify voices from Indigenous-led change movements.
- Our Board of
Directors & Board of Advisors will also reflect and represent Native
people.
- Each year,
our organization will revise and strengthen this action plan. We’ll continue to
conduct research and receive feedback from people in our community. We will
share this action plan with our networks and encourage other organizations to
create their own.
